What error is it giving you?

In IE, go to tools>options>connections>advanced and make sure that everything is set to 'automatic'. Unless you are using a proxy.

I mean, you surely have internet access since you are sending these messages. Another thing to check is that your windows xp firewall is not blocking them. To check this, try disabling it temporarily (in control panel>security centre), if you can access the net, then we know the problem to be fixed is that.
