Re: Web links on desktop keep losing custom Icons for ugly blue E

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I saw in the MS article I mentioned in my first letter.

This one?

Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/133733

1. In Control Panel, double-click Display.
2. Click the Appearance tab.
3. In the Item box, click Icon.
4. Increase the icon size by one unit.
5. Click Apply.
6. Decrease the icon size by one unit, and then click OK.
7. Restart your computer.

That forces Windows to rebuild the cache file. The same as deleting
IconCache.db does, it forces Windows to rebuild it.

This still works for Windows XP.

Right click Desktop | Properties | Appearance tab | Advanced button |
Click the V Under Item: to expand the menu |
Select Icon from the list | Set size to 31 | Click OK | Click OK |
Click the V Under Item: to expand the menu |
Select Icon from the list | Set size to 32 | Click OK | Click OK |
Reboot

32 Icon size is the default size.

Liked your TV show. ;-)

Thanks Wesley,

I'll let you know. The references that you gave look like the same things
I saw in the MS article I mentioned in my first letter.

Thanks again,

ShellIconCache and IconCache.db

In Windows 98 and Windows Me hidden file ShellIconCache found at:
%systemroot%\ShellIconCache

In Windows XP it is a hidden file called IconCache.db
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

Delete IconCache.db

IconCache.db. A Hidden file located in...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Application Data

After deleting IconCache.db, it will be automatically recreated.

Using this method it doesn't matter if Show hidden files and folders is
selected or not.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data

Right click IconCache.db and select Delete.

these link to whatever is embedded in the web site, NOT the big blue
"e". So he right clicks goes to properties and change Icon and bing
bang boom, instead of a big "e" for his Google shortcut he has the
Google Icon Logo. All worked well for many months then all of a sudden
all the web links went back to the big "e", and would not change back.
After some research a MS knowledge base article was found that said to
drop to 16 bit color change the Icons, and them go back to 32 bit color
at which time the Icons would actually change to the web site Icon. The
article also talked about a shelliconcach setting in the registry,
which was not there and I had to add. It also talked about deleting the
shelliconcach file, which turned out in this case not to be called
shelliconcache, but I believe something.db.

Well although the Icons would change to the desired custom logos ect
after going back to 32 bit color, on reboot they would all be "e" again.

Does anyone have any ideas on how get around or fix this bug.

Thanks for your help,

Ralph Malph
