First of all, you don't use a web browser. Use a news reader client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird (there are others).

You need some information for each server:

Microsoft peer support (These groups):
msnews.microsoft.com
port 119 (the default)
no password necessary

Check the support pages on your ISP's web site for their USENET server's name and port number. Unfortunately SOME ISPs don't operate USENET servers for their customers. Cox has illustrated instructions for configuring Outlook Express to access their mail and news servers. there's a link below the illustrations to a page to help you identify the proper server names for email and news.

The "alt" and "rec" groups on USENET have numerous groups on all sorts of topics. WARNING: While there are MANY uncontroversial groups, some USENET groups cover topics SOME parents might not want their minor children reading about.

Outlook Express has an Add account wizard on the "Tools"|Account..." menu. Look for the "Add >" button on the right side of the popup. Since any email address you enter in the wizard will be vulnerable to a barrage of SPAM as soon as you start posting use an account you don't mind receiving the SPAM on or enter a email address domain name you KNOW isn't valid. the wizard is pretty straightforward

Thunderbird has a pop-up with a tree structure on the left and form objects like text boxes and option buttons on the right. The process for mail and news accounts are pretty similar. Look for "Account Settings..." on the "Tools" menu.
