Windows messenger, how to get rid of

Got a new Windows XP Pro system. Working my way through disabling apps in
startup or where ever appropriate. I am trying to disable Windows
messenger. I go to Messenger/tool/ options/preferences and have unchecked
everything and rebooted. Yet it still appears in the tray on start up. If
I'm in Outlook express and I try to exit messenger it says "other
applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. and
that I must close these other apps before you can exit Windows Messenger",
Yet I thought by going to tools/options/preferences and unchecking all the
boxes it shouldn't be running at all. What else do I have to do to shut it
down permanently?
TIA
.
