Re: upgrading to xp

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

If I do a clean install all my data will be lost right?

Yes. If you do a clean installation, *everything* on the drive is is lost.
You need to first backup and then after installing XP, restore all your
backed up data.

That's one of the main reasons I disagree with Don Schmidt and recommend
that you do an Upgrade installation. Unlike with previous versions of
Windows, an upgrade to XP replaces almost everything, and usually works very
well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much easier
than a clean installation. You can always change your mind and reinstall
cleanly if problems develop.

However, don't assume that doing an upgrade relieves you of the need to
backup your data, etc. before beginning. Before starting to upgrade, it's
always prudent to recognize that things like a sudden power loss can occur
in the middle of it and cause the loss of everything. For that reason you
should make sure you have backups and anything else you need to reinstall if
the worst happens.

Also if my
system crashes can i reinstall with the upgrade version

Yes, as long as you keep your Windows XP CD, which will be prompted for as
proof of ownership of a previous qualifying version when you do this.

Also note that you can only upgrade (or do a clean installation with the
Upgrade version by using the Windows 2000 CD as proof of ownership of a
previous qualifying version) if you buy XP *Professional*. There is no
supported Upgrade path from Windows 2000 Professional to XP Home

Yes you can do it with the upgrade version. I suggest you do a clean
install rather than putting xp in on top of 2000. Just have the
2000 CD handy for when xp asks for a qualifying Windows CD.
