I have the disk with the operating system that came with the computer is this
ok? Also can I partition the new os on my current drive to leave the data
intact? There are alot of media files I don't want to loose. Thanks

A clean install starts by formatting the partition onto which you are
installing XP. Everything on that partition witll be "lost".

CAUTION: The following assumes that you have a 2000 CD. If not, then you
will be unable to use the upgrade version of XP. rather, you will need the
full version of XP, which costs more.

Suggestions if you currently have one big "C:\" drive: (1) get an external
hard drive (USB 2.0). (2) copy personal files to that drive. (3) Use the
XP recovery console, which can be run from the CD to delete the C: partition
on the ninternal drive. (4) Use the XP recovery console to make at least
two partitions. (5) Install XP on the first partition. (6) Once XP is
installed and working, copy the data back to the second or higher partition.

The reason for separating your valuable data/files form the operating system
is that XP can crash, and if you have only one big C: drive, restoring XP
could wipe your files. That is not the case if XP is on a separate
partition.

Beyond a full re-install, the retail version of XP (upgrade or full, but not
OEM) supports a feature called a reapir installation, which refreshes the XP
system files, without erasing your data. XP also has a feature called
system restore for smaller problems. Still, if you preapre for the worst,
maybe it will never happen.

If I do a clean install all my data will be lost right? Also if my system
crashes can i reinstall with the upgrade version

Yes you can do it with the upgrade version. I suggest you do a clean
install rather than putting xp in on top of 2000. Just have the 2000 CD
handy for when xp asks for a qualifying Windows CD.
