Re: Help recovering my operating system

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

The laptop with my files on it, is an Emachines M6811, no floppy. I can get
to bios to tell it to boot from cd. I can tell the cd is working by the
lights, but no action.

The second one with the stop error is a Dell 600m. Here is the exact stop
error message:

stop error 0x00000024 (0x001902f8, 0xf9eb3818, 0xf9eb3518, 0xf965d857)

ntfs.sys address f964d857 base at f9653000 date stamp 3b7dc5d0.

I see its a file system error, but how do I run the chkdsk /f where?

First of all, I have XP Professional. The copy installed on my laptop I got
from school, tried to make a back up copy of it, and have since cracked the
disk. (I still have the copy). Secondly, because of this I had to purchase
another genuine XP Pro disc w/sp2. Turned on laptop got error message
config.sys file corrupt. Mom wasted coffee in keyboard so up/down arrows,
enter and "\" don't work. Purchased an adapter to attach another keyboard
after turning off computer. Turn it on now, get the message to use repair
feature from the cd. Put in xp copy, and genuine xp disk computer will not
do anything. The screen goes black, when I restart it, I get nothing.

Second laptop. Dell xp Pro/sp2. Got a stop error message, when I looked it
up on the microsoft site error related to windows 2000. Can get to the
screen to choose options safe mode...etc. Every choice I make, computer
restarts, error message flashes quickly now so I can't get what the stop
error is and Windows keeps rebooting it's self. I did read that it said to
disable antivirus software installed, but I can't get in to do this. Tried to
reinstall Windows again, can't.

Is it possible to erase the operating system on both computer? If so, when
I put the disk in, how? it won't let me repair. I need the files off my
first computer, so the system restore disks are not an option at this point.
Second laptop, is my friends, and it won't let me repair or reinstall
operating system. I want to tell him or reorder his system restore disks,
but I would like to know how to fix this without resorting to that. Is it
feasible?

What is the make and model of your laptop? Go into the BIOS Setup and
make sure that it is configured to boot from the CD as first priority.
Does this laptop have a 3.5 inch diskette drive? There is an
alternative procedure that can be used if the machine has both a 3.5
diskette and a CD drive available at the same time. Some laptops have
removable drives allowing you to have either the 3.5 diskette or the
CD drive but not both. What I have in mind won't work for these.

What was the exact STOP message that you got on the second laptop,
including all 4 parameter codes? Where there any file or module names
mentioned as part of the message? Again, does this machine have both
a 3.5 diskette and CD drive available at the same time?

That additional information will help determine what the next steps
should be.

Good luck
