Did you mean to type "wgalogon.dll" or is "wglogon.dll" what you
really see? The first is the .dll associated with Windows validation.
The second is unknown and if that is really what you see, probably
malware.

First make sure the computer is really clean by going through these
steps systematically:

Thanks for prompt reply.

Yes you are correct should be wgalogon.dll. Tryping figers taking over
again!!

Further info on what I did is as follows:-

Checked for malware of all types with my antivirus and two other
online antivirus scanners.

Also ran Spybot and the antispyware feature of Zone Alarm.

In addition I have run Windows Defender on a regular basis . All these
with no problems shown except the odd tracking cookie. All were
removed.

I then put the WinXP logon screen into verbose mode .

That is when the 30 second or so boot up delay was shown with the
wgalog.dll file apparently doing the slowing down at boot up.

I fiddled with this as per an article on the web . Wgalogon.dll
disappeared and then wlnotify.dll appeared in its place.

More fiddling and this disappeared to be replaced by "group logon
scripts" notification which also remained visible for the same 30
secs or so.

For once I am totally lost .

I am trying to avoid formating the drive and reloading everything
hence my question.

Will follow your links and let you know how it goes.

You mentioned that this occurrence was sudden. Can you 1) pinpoint what
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't; and 2)
maybe doing a simple System Restore would be a good next step before
going through the clean-boot troubleshooting.

Carey Frisch - I honestly don't know if the help referenced is just for
false invalid reports or if the "WGA troubleshooting specialist" can

One more WAG - try uninstalling Zone Alarm and see what happens. ZA has
caused a lot of problems in various areas and maybe it is causing your
issues, too. Make sure you uninstall per their instructions:
