The problem may also be with your packet-writing software. Packet-writing software uses a special algorithm to write your files to compact discs whenever you insert a blank disc. Although Windows XP already has the CD Burning tool (packet-writing software) built in, your disc-burning software may have installed its own packet writing program. If you use Ahead Nero 6 Ultra Edition, your packet-writing program is InCD 4. If you use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5, your packet-writing software is Drag-to-Disc. First, please disable your packet-writing software. [Roxio puts an icon in the system tray, and InCD is accessible from Ahead Nero StartSmart]. Then, try enabling the CD burning on the drive as Patrick suggested. If that does not work, you can also try to disable the CD burning on the drive, and use your packet-writing software to create discs. (If you have the Ahead Nero suite, you may need to download InCD from http://www.ahead.de). I hope that these suggestions will help you solve your problem.

When in windows explorer there is no dialog to send files to a folder to be written to a CD, and no dialog to write a file to a CD... I can use a software program to do this. Not sure what happened to the native feature.
Perhaps it's been turned off. Open My Computer, right-click on the CD drive, choose Properties, then Recording, then check hte Enable Recording box.
