I am trying to do an XP Pro upgrade on a new HP laptop that came with XP
Home.

Procedure:

With XP Home running on the laptop, insert the XP Pro (SP2) uprade CD.

At one point while copying the files, setup fails with a message about not
being able to load some files.

I reboot, long onto Windows XP Home, and setup resumes.

When setup finishes, the system reboots and I get a screen giving me a
choice between Windows XP Home or resuming XP Pro setup (the latter is the
default action). If I let the default action run, I get a message about a
missing hal.sys file. If I select the booting from XP Home Edition, then I
get logged on fine, and when I look into My Computer properties, I see that
XP Pro SP2 has been installed.

I tried rebuilding the system using the HP recovery CDs, but the same
happens.

I also tried installing all the updates on XP Home Edition, including the
additional downloads recommended by the Knowledge Base to no avail.

Seeing that it seems everything is running fine, how do I get rid of this
initial logon options screen?

Hard to tell from the above if you actually managed to upgrade the OS. But
be advised, if you upgrade your laptop to Pro, your warranty
may be voided. A lot of manufacturers will not support PCs/laptops when the user change the version of Windows that came with the unit.

I'm not sure about this maybe someone else can help. My guess and it is
a guess :-) is that you need to edit the boot.ini. Check this article and check your boot.ini against the default. Remove the references to XP home.
