IE not working

I am able to get downloads from Bittorrent and for anti-virus updates etc,
but when I go into Internet Explorer I get a message saying: 'Internet
Explorer cannot display the webpage'.
My computer had been turned off for 3 days before this happened.
I have no previous restoration point in System Restore, so I am not able to
reset things.
Any ideas please?
