Re: Upgrade to Windows XP Pro and scandisk

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I am finally getting back to this. I downloaded the driver update from the
Gateway site for the chipset. The PC is continuing to reboot itself
repeatedly.
A friend suggested that I run in debug mode. Now I have error messages to
interpert. Is there a location where I can find them? I will copy some of
them below.

Chipset drivers, you locate your PC sys on their site, if no longer manu it
may be in an 'archive' or similarly named location within the site. Then look
in downloads for all available winxp drivers.

I'll try this again tonight. I did try to correct the network card driver
by
using the process that you described. I went to the extent of deleting
the
device driver, telling the system to re-survey so that it discovered the
network card and then telling it to pick up my updated driver. It refused
to
accept it. If necessary, I will contact them to verify that that it does
indeed work with XP Pro, as described on the web site.

Download chipset drivers??? It is a large manufacturer---Gateway. I will
go to their site and look for what?

In Hardware devices, locate network card, assuming there is a yellow
exclamation mark update driver and point it to your downloaded driver.
If no yellow mark select properties and determine exactly which driver
its
using, if different to download driver update.
Visit your mobo manu site or PC manu if large OEM, eg Dell, download and
install chipset drivers
NB Whilst an upgrade of this nature usually goes well, it is often
better to
clean Install

I relied on the default drivers in all but two cases.
a) I installed the HP printer driver from the disk provided by the
manufacturer
b) Using another machine, I downloaded the driver for the network card
for
my DSL router. That's another problem. The system insists that the
card
is
defective--even though it was working right before the upgrade.

If you can boot in safe mode its possibly a driver problem.
Did you check hw manu for winxp drivers or did you rely on default
win
drivers?

I upgraded this weekend from windows 98 to windows xp pro. The
initial
upgrade went perfectly. However...
I logged the computer off after the upgrade. When I turned the
computer
back on the computer went through a chkdsk/scandisk like process
as if
I
had
not logged on successfully. It then presented the message that it
was
starting windows; it brought up the opening screen and then
proceeded
to
reboot itselt and go through the scandisk process again. I
allowed it
to
do
this 3 times before I intervened and tried to stop the scandisk
process.
Nevertheless, it rebooted again and did the same. I am able to
run in
safe
mode, but I don't know what should be changed to prevent scandisk
from
running over and over.

Note: I ran a virus checker and a spyware checker before
upgrading. I
don't
think that is the problem. I do know that I was unable to run
scandisk
before the upgrade. The windows 98 message said that I needed to
update
the
himem parameter. (Which I did--to no effect). How can I bypass
this
scandisk process?
