Does the sound volume icon show in the systray?
Is the sound muted?
What shows as your Preferred Device in Control Panel > Sounds > Audio tab?
Are any devices showing conflicts or as Unknown/Other in Device Manager?
Is your sound device listed in Device Manager under Sounds, Video and Game Controllers?

I have switched on today and I have no sounds but the media player still works!.
The problem arose after I removed Windows One Care Beta that I decided to
evaluate - it caused so many problems I decided to remove it. I also removed
Windows Defender.
After removing them the sound was fine.
I have worked through other sound problems (Especially XP original sound
11/16/2005 - Carey Frisch ) with no luck.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
