You need to give some details about your system.
What is the capacity of your hard drive?
How much of your hard drive is used?
What file system do you use, FAT or NTFS?
How large is your swap file?
How much RAM does your system have?

In any case, as the free space gets smaller, your performance will suffer,
and more and more fragmentation will occur. At about 15% free space, you
can no longer get good defragmentation.

There are lots of things you can do to free up hard drive space, but first
we need to know the answers to the above questions.
For example, if you have an 80 GByte hard drive with only 5 GBytes free
space, deleting 5 GBytes of files to leave 10 GBytes of free space is not
going to help very much. You will just have to keep doing deletions over
and over. On the other hand, if with the same situation you can delete 20
GBytes of files then you are good to go.

You are going to have to make some choices, none of which have much to do
with Windows XP.
