If the Windows XP defragmenter reports that defragmentation is not
necessary, then you don't need to do it now. But it would be okay to do it
now - eventually it will be necessary from time to time.
As for main memory, or RAM; this is NOT a hard drive. This is memory on
chips that plug into the motherboard. Actually the chips are mounted on a
small printed circuit board (about 5" x 1 1/4"), usually called a memory
module. The modules you get must be the correct ones for your type of
motherboard and CPU, and must be plugged in correctly. What you need is
RAM, NOT a hard drive to help with slow response time.
I would suggest that you get a knowledgeable person to help you choose the
correct modules and then help install. Or you might want to take the
systems in to a computer repair shop for installation. The actual
installation requires opening the case, but the total time necessary for
installation is only a couple of minutes. What you should be working toward
is for your kids to get interested in the ins and outs of computers, and
learn how to do installations of software and hardware themselves. Then YOU
want have to worry about it. I'd suggest, however, that an exceptional 9
year old is about the lower age limit B^) My daughter began at about that
age; but then I've been working with computers since 1965.
If you want information about choosing the correct memory modules, try
