Go to Folder Options> and remove the checkmark from Hide Extensions for
Known File Types. I may not have the wording quite right (the Windows
machines aren't on now), but the setting will be obvious. Now you will
see the file extension which is the three letters after the "dot" in
the file name. Ex.: document.doc
Windows associates a program with a file extension. It knows about a lot
of extensions. In the above example, Windows knows that a *.doc file is
an MS Word document (sometimes can be opened with Wordpad if MS Word
isn't installed on the system). When Windows comes across an unknown
file extension, it will ask what program should be associated with it.
