Starting in regular mode

Hello
I have recently acquired an Asus notebook L1400 series running Windows XP Professional. It is a PIII, 256 MB RAM, 10 GB free HD space. HD is partitioned into two 10 GB drives. No viruses or malware evident - all anti virus, anti malware programs up to date and run regularly.. Use Zone Alarm firewall. CCleaner used to clean up rubbish, careful check done for any rogue programs starting up. Defrag. run regularly..
I can only get the computer to start in Safe Mode, whenever I try to start it normally, it starts up, shows the XP Professional splash screen, there is some hard disk activity for about 30 seconds and then nothing except a regular hard disk activity light flash. every two or three seconds
The computer always starts with the same user name who has full rights. I cannot switch to administrator as I do not have the password and previous owner is unknown - notebook purchased at auction.
Any help to get me into normal mode greatly appreciated.
Thanks Echy .
