New XP Pro installation will not play CDs

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Clean install of XP Pro all went well and both DVD and CDRW are recognized
in device manager BUT neither will play or even recognize a CD of any kind.
I know both drives work ok because they work with Win98SE and I installed XP
using one of them. Nothing else installed except all current updates and CA
antivirus (not firewall just antivirus). When I put in a cd in either drive
and try to see it either in My computer or Win Explorer I get a not
responding error.
DUH!
Any suggestions please
