It's not true that it's never used for anything. A and B are used for
diskette drives. Back in the early days of PCs, before hard drives were
common, many machines had only two diskette drives. Today in these days of
readily-available cheap hard drives, having two diskette drives, while still
possible, is very rare.
Having even one diskette drive is getting to be rare these days. In a few
more years people may start asking why the letters A and B are never used.
