Sorry to get to this post so late. Though over a week old I might be of
some help. So, assuming you haven't got it fixed yet.....

What I have:
3 machines, 1 desktop with XP Pro named P4, 1 desktop with XP Pro named X2,
and one Toshiba laptop with XP Home named (wanna guess?) Tosh. The toshiba
was already set up with SP2 and all that security stuff. I turned all of it
off. I have a D-Link wireless g router. Have a regular LAN port in the
Tosh, and also wireless G. Have a regular 10/100/1000 LAN in each of the
desktops. I have SP2 installed on both of them as well, and all the
security 'features' turned off as well on both. I have Zone Alarm Pro
installed on X2 and 'free' Zone Alarm installed on the Tosh and P4.

Now, on each of my systems:
Control Panel > Networking > [pick the LAN connection you're using if more
than one]> Properties> General tab: and in here I have:
Client For Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Under tab Authentication I UNchecked IEEE 802.1x authentication for this
network. On ALL 3 systems. Under tab Advanced, uncheck it as none of these
systems is a gateway for another system, and Windows Firewall is OFF too.
Once this was done, I opened Windows Explorer (on each system in turn),
right click on the C:\ drive icon, select Sharing and Security from the
little menu. It opens to the Sharing tab. when you are first setting up a
drive to be shared you have the option of using Simple Sharing. Click on
that and you will get a warning dialog, click the link in the dialog TO
share the drive. You can keep the defaults in the next screen I think.
The final result is the name of the HD as it appears in Windows Explorer,
and the two boxes Share this folder on the network and Allow network users
to change my files are both checked.
Once this was done, I shut down all the systems AND the D-Link router. I
then started the router by itself, waited until all its lights were normal.
Then turned each computer on and checked the routers page for the DHCP
client to be sure the new one is in there. When I was done all 3 systems
can access the router and see that all 3 systems are in the DHCP client
table. Note the client IP's on the local network. Zone Alarm will need
those.
At this time, all 3 systems can now access all shared drives/folders on each
of the others.

I hope this finds something you missed, and helps.
Regards,
Michael
