George, if you search the past year in this newsgroup you'll find that I posted a number of times with the exact procedure you used, with variable and miserable and frustrating results. I used Ghost 2003.......I used Partition Magic 8.........and I used Drive Image 7 .........I got plenty of advice in this forum (and plenty of sharp-edged criticism, telling me how easy and sure various methods are). It isn't easy, and it does make a clone every time but some parts of the Master Boot (or whatever it is) don't set up right. I offer you sympathy and the more or less final results of my agony:
The procedure I use now, that seems to do just what you want, almost every time, was posted by Richard Urban. I use Drive Image 7. I make sure first that the source drive has been defragged, and has gone through chkdsk/r to make sure it is clean. I only make a clone of a partition which is the first partition on the drive, and which is Active and Primary. I make a Drive Image of it.
Then I prepare the target drive. I make sure that the first thing I see on the drive is an Unallocated area at least as large as the source. Then I use PQRE from Drive Image 7 to "Recover" the clone from the Drive Image. I don't let it reboot automatically. I don't let it copy the Master Boot Record. I DO let it make the new drive/partition/clone Active. And it works just about every time.
I am no authority on this; I'm telling you what I have found. My
procedure, for which I thank Richard Urban, works for me when
nothing else worked for me. I suggest that you search this newsgroup
for his postings, in case I forgot anything. He stated it clearly
and logically and simply, step by step. You may hear about other software that is infallible, and I hope you do and that it is.
Good luck.

Hello, I am working trying to get my XP OS switched from the current C: to a new WD hard drive I just got. I tried the Maxtor backup get it to restore to this new drive with no luck. My thoughts on Maxtor's backup software are not printable on this forum . . . anyway, I used my copy of Ghost 2003 to clone the current C:\ to the new drive. It transferred with not problems. I disconnected the old C:\ and changed the jumpers on the new hard drive (I also changed the cable so that drive is now the primary drive). It will boot into XP but hangs on the Windows XP window. It doesn't even go to start. I can boot into safe mode but hell, I don't know what to do there! I have tried using Norton Recovery disk but it gets almost loaded and then reboots . .
Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong . . . everyone keeps telling me this is simple and to do this and that . . . of course they don't know what they are talking about . . .
