Windows XP does not shut down

Recently Windows XP has stopped shutting down. It seems to hang and the
"Windows shutting down" screen and I have to unplug the CPU as the button
will not shut it off, now will Control, Alt, Delete.
As stated above, this is a recent problem. I would appreciate any
assistance you could give.
