damn cursor (curser)

hi,
in the last few days my cursor/pointer has been changing from
hour glass to pointer at 3 second intervals; i thought it would
stop after a few reboots, and especially considering i am in the
middle of rebooting and running anti-malaware programs for
an unrelated problem.
so, does anyone have any thoughts on how to rid myself of this
very annoying infliction?
is it a 'mouse' related problem?
i guess the other point is why it started in the first place.
