Removing the ports is not "dangerous" they will be
redetected and reinstalled on rebooting. You then will be
able to reinstall your hardware.
You should have a uninstall in the HP folder for the device,
too.

Two years is "old" in computer years. Be sure to download
the latest drivers to a folder and rather than installing
from the CD, use that folder.
