Settings in XP are not optimized for max performance. An excellent free
program to help is SpeedXP. Level of fragmentation also affects speed. Defrag
and clean system about once a week or so. Also clean out the prefetch file
about once a month if you do a lot of installing /uninstalling of programs as
it gets cluttered. The prefetch will become populated completely after 3 or 4
boots. Protect against spyware\adware with free programs like SpywareBlaster,
SpywareGuard, Spybot Search and Destroy,Adaware, and Bulldog. With a few
registry tweaks XP can be all the system you want and become more stable.
There are about 60 tweaks that will help but the list is too long to give
here. Turning off pop-up balloons and info bubbles and so on help a lot.
Turning off all auto updates in every program and manually updating helps.
Turn off all the eye candy like drop shadows and so on help. The list is
almost endless. It could take a few days for you to get and implement them
all. Turn off the useless system restore and use the NT Backup instead. Turn
off indexing, {:~)
