Before trying to uninstall them through Device Manger have
you tried using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel to
remove the scanner software? And then rebooting.

For more information about how to "change or remove a
program" search the Windows XP Professional Help and
Support Center for the words in double-quotes (with the
quotes) and read the Full-text Search Match by that title.
