There are PCI graphics cards but generally they are not as
fast as the current AGP cards. AGP bus is direct while a
PCI slot must wait for input/output. The mobo he has may
have on-board graphics that are very limited or quit good
depending on how they are configured.
I looked on the HP website and did not find the Pavilion
612a but I did find a 612k and it has an AGP slot. That
model used an ASUS mobo. You should look at the report and
see what mobo your brother has and then go to that website
and get the mobo manual. If you don't have an AGP card
installed, it might not be obvious whether there is an open
AGP slot.
