Deleting Document History Takes Forever?

I use a lot of documents, excel files etc, which all get logged in the
Documents folder on the Start menu. Because of this I generally clear the
list every day. However, the performance of this seems terrible, with it
taking approx 20-60secs to clear. It doesnt actually matter if there are
documents to clear or not; it always takes this amount of time...
Any suggestions?
