 I have been running XP Home for about a year now. I have
kept up with updates and update my virus protection
weekly. Recently I began getting an error message for
userinit.exe when logging on to a user account. It asked
for the disc to be inserted in cd.Click cancel and the
message goes away and everything ran ok. I do not have an
XP disc. When this began appearing I searched the MS
Database but was not able to find an answer. I also used
the utility offered to scan for most recent viruses and it
said my system was clean. Now the program will
automaticlly log off the user account immediatly after
logging on and I am effectivly locked out. This happens in
all modes and with all of our accounts, both password
protected and not.
  What does userinit.exe do and how can I restore it? I
have both XP and 98 installed on same HD. Can I access DOS
for the XP through the 98? I know that I can get to 98
through XP when it is running properly but how about the
opposite. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my XP
contains all my digital photography.
