Thanks for the reply.
I was not aware of the event log. I took a look and saw hundreds of errors
and twice as many warnings. Now that I am aware of it, I will check it
immediately upon restart after the next hard shutdown.
As to the hard shutdown, imagine working on a desktop with no UPS and the
power goes out. No warning, no nothing. BANG, it's off. This is a laptop,
it's only done it on mains power, 4 or 5 times while I'm in the middle of
typing a sentence, and a dozen or more times while it's not being used, but
is on, and docked on it's port replicator with mains power and a battery
installed.
I'll try the supervisor trick next time I call IBM, although it's more
likely right now that this system will be on Ebay by the end of this week,
as soon as I bring my old Celeron 400 Toshiba back on line. A far superior
machine to this one, in all ways except processor speed.
