Thank you both very much, BUT after restoring the files to that directory, I
still don't get the welcome screen.. I don't know what else I've deleted.
I have made sure that USE WELCOME SCREEN in USER ACCOUNTS is still checked.
Is there anything else I can do?

In addition:
Restore User Default Pictures [to the path which Sharon stated]:

Windows will create a new resized file in that user's folders and then use it on the Welcome screen and on the XP style start menu. If you are truly missing the default images, these are normally located here: Documents and Settings\All Users\Applciation Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures There are 23 of bitmap files (*.BMP), each about 7kb in size: airplane, astronaut, ball, beach, butterfly, car, cat, chess, dirt bike, dog, drip, duck, fish, frog, guitar, horses, kick, lift-off, palm tree, pink flower, red flower, skater and snowflake, You could use Start> Run> MSCONFIG> General> Expand to expand each one from the Windows CD to the folder mentioned above. -- Sharon F MS MVP - Windows XP Shell/User
