Windows Updates Crashed My Computer: What do I do

I have had my Windows updates shut off for the last 2 years because the last
time I tried installing Microsoft XP SP 2 it crashed my computer. I was able
to get it back online using the safe mode setting. 2 days ago, I went to the
microsoft update page and downloaded and installed the 58 or so updates i had
missed in the last 2 years. after i installed them, i noticed that my
computer speed had slowed considerably. everytime i would open anything, it
took at least 5 minutes to open and run then it would freeze randomly. i
used the task manager and noticed that it was something called svchost.exe
that was causing this so i could force it to close, only to have it open and
lag my pc again. thus, last night i turned off my pc and i figured i would
solve the problem in the morning. so this morning i woke up and noticed my
pc was slow again so i system restored back to friday after i had installed
some updates (however, for some reason the updates deleted one of my restore
points that i created that was before i installed ANY of them). so it system
restores and reboots and then it stays on the microsoft xp screen for half an
hour. i spend the next hour shutting down and rebooting the computer hoping
for it to load but it doesn't and freezes at the xp screen.

i call hp (my computer maker) for help and they tell me they are sorry and
ask if i would like to pay $50 for one time help. i scoff at this idea
because microsoft updates messed up my computer. next i think of
reinstalling microsoft xp in order to at least get back to normal. after i
do this, i notice that my computer no longer recognizes my wireless internet
key and so now i'm stuck wit no internet on my computer (i'm typing on
another computer btw). i am very disappointed that microsoft updates has
wasted my entire day trying to figure out how to get my computer back to
functioning. i'm pretty sure i will never use microsoft updates again.

has anyone else ever encountered a problem like this and if so, what did you
do to remedy the situation. i also looked for numbers for microsoft
technical support but could not find any numbers that allowed me to talk to a
human being. please help. thank you.
