Oh, and as a side note, I ran into a few of my clients machines onsite with
a Defender error in the same week, haven't looked into the cause yet.

Thank you, yes, I totally understand the corruption thing on the user end.
I
was just mad when I had to take it in for "repair". The thing I wonder
about
computer shops is they can always blame EVERYTHING on a virus and someone
like me who knows nothing on the technical side of a computer, has to
take
their word for it and pay for what could be, perhaps, something they did
wrong when they built the thing. And his excuse about "daylight savings"
with Defender, it just sounded a bit suspect to me. As a writer, I have
to
have something I can depend upon. But thanks for your input Dave, I'm
just
still a little raw after buying a $1600 computer and already having to
take
it in for repairs.

Frustrations aside, no shop will warranty software, the reason is this,
you
as the user have the ability to corrupt the software and OS on your PC.
Whether you do it intentionally or not, it is part of the PC that you can
directly effect due to lack of knowledge or ignorance. I'm not saying
that
is the case here, but that's why there is no warranty on software.
Defender is a Microsoft product that does not ship with XP, either you
installed it or they did. Personally I'd remove it, it's not all that
impressive. A lemon? can't say with the info provided, but if your issue
turns out to be software, then definitely not. Even if it's a hardware
problem, a failure after 2 months does not make it a lemon.

I am furious but don't know where to channel my anger. In NOVEMBER 2006
I
purchased a brand new computer. It came with all the bells and
whistles;
I
was so happy - my first never-used computer. That was just TWO MONTHS
ago!!!!
I started getting messages saying "Defender something" was expired. I
called the local shop where I bought the computer and they told me to
go
to
Microsoft and download another copy. I tried doing that but it
wouldn't
load. I called the shop again...they said uninstall the old copy and
reinstall a new copy. It STILL wouldn't load so I ignored it. This
past
Friday I turned on my computer and my Windows XP wouldn't load. I
couldn't
load it "normally", safe mode, safe mode with networking, with last
known
configuration" -- nothing worked. Call the shop; they said bring it
in.
So
all weekend -- no computer -- I'm a writer and lost two days toward a
critical deadline. Took the computer in yesterday the guy said they've
had a
lot of customers with the same "Defender" problem but I was the only
one
saying Windows wouldn't load. I asked them why Defender was expiring
after I
had just purchased the computer in November. He said it had something
to
do
with "day light saving time that Microsoft upgraded or some "bull" like
that.
I asked if it was still under warranty. He said ONLY if it was HARDWARE
but
any SOFTWARE problem would be my responsibility to pay for fixing. I
asked
how much -- he said $75 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A two month old
computer
and I'm already paying money to fix it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I
mad
at
the computer shop (Ace Computer, yeah, right...), I'm mad at a brand
new
copy
of Microsoft XP and I'm mad at Defender!!
Please tell me -- do I have any recourse??? Should I dump the
computer
now
and start over, did I buy a lemon??? What's with this daylight
savings
time
thing???
HELP!!! ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS FRUSTRATION??? Bill Gates would be
embarrassed if he knew that someone bought a NEW computer and two of
his
products (Defender & Microsoft) failed after two month use!!
