About six months ago I went through the similar problem. IE6 behaved as you have described. The problem arises, because
of a spyware/virus trouble which only messes up the IE but all else seems work well. I had to re-load my Windows XP Pro
to get rid of the problem. To keep off of this trouble, make sure you use these free programs running at least once a
week. Regular virus checkers such as Norton or McAfee does not relieve you from this trouble.
1. Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition, download from
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.php
2. Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4, download from
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
3. Microsoft Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
4. For Home PC, I use AVG Free Edition for virus check.

Always use Microsoft Internet Explorer updates regularly. Good luck.

: Here's a scenario. I have a customer who had another browser installed as his
: default and removed it to use IE 6.0 with XP Pro.
:
: He created three (maybe it's four) shortcuts from the browser to Yahoo,
: Google, E-bay and Paypal so all he will have to do is double click on the
: shortcut icon on the desktop to launch up the browser and go to that site.
: But now, it reads that it can't read (the shortcut) the right program to
: launch... the browser up...
:
: But, however, when the user clicks on IE 6.0 and uses his favorites he can
: visit those sites. But the shortcuts don't let him... the error is like a
: program has been removed and can't find it to start... when in fact it's a
: short cut trying to launch up a browser.
:
: Does anyone know what could be the fix, to resolve this issue so that IE 6.0
: will launch when clicking on the short cut. Oh, he has tried to re-create the
: shortcut icon and still problem persist!?
:
: Thanks!
