REQ help with shutdown hangup.

hi, i'm running xp pro on a newly built system, ( about 3 weeks old )
i built it myself and it's the third pc i've built, i've had no problems
whatsoever with it, except a long hangup when i shut down. it goes
through to the blue "windows is shutting down" screen, saves my settings
etc,
but hangs when it gets to the actual shut down point, weird thing is, i can
re-start no problem, and probably 1 in 8 shutdowns work ok.
the system has all latest windows updates, and is spyware and virus free,
(i use spybot for spyware adware etc, and pc-cillin for my virus
protection.)
if any one has any clue to what is causing this and perhaps a solution i
would
be most gratefull.
thanks in advance.
Nick.
