.... And more issues still!

I would be interested to know what the feedback on this
situation is... rather long but lets start from the
outset...

About two weeks ago, I had the brilliant idea of upgrading
from MS Office 2000 Pro to XP Office Pro. On install,
previous version was detected and the install process
removed prior version. Upon Install of XP Off. the
install kept halting due to the detection of prior
version. visit to the MS support site showed solution,
and D/L tool to correct. (the cjain of events had already
started on the previous step). Unfortunately. the upshot
was that the D/L tool corrupted the O/S and in its process
of removing prior traces, which are obviously included in
the restore files, i lost all sys restore capabilities,
and was left with remains of Office 2000 Pro files and in
the registry... it took two days of reg editing, and
general screwing with to get it back up (i know what you
are thinking - re install the old version and un
install... unfortunately wouldnt work as the
install/uninstall/patch fix/reinstall screwed a number of
processes and now both versions failed install - ho hum !)

ANYWAY... finally got it back A-OK with XP Office, but now
having some random freezing, and other errors. all randon
and in diff programs etc. so nothing to determine a
source...

so two days ago making a change with tweak xp, without
touching the icon repair key, merely passing through that
section my icon were 'repaired' to the low version (in
systrat, taskbar & prog list), this had occured before to
desktop icons, but simply re linked to the icon cachand
all good. this time however, i couldnt as i was logged on
without admin privelleges (only ever set the owner and
guest accounts and always logged on as owner...

sp into user accounts.. hmmm cant access user accounts !

on into the admin tools.. hmm lots of user accounts about
3 admin, about 3 owner, about 3 default.. all the usual
suspects but in mutliples.

unfortunately, couldnt log into any or gain access to
change any... tried in safe mode, which then resulted
in "pagefile" too small...

checked the page file, it was set as it should tried
increasing size . nothing.... sys restore corrupted,
shows there but denied..

reboot - nope. no luck.

reboot from back up external drive - nope. dont have back
up permission need to log in as administrator.

reboot from XP CD Hah ! NOPE ! XP master on HP restore
disk can only rip it up and start again !

so the upshot is now underway after having had no choice
but a "C: format" and clean back to as purchased state an
underway with a restore from external back up drive !...

my conclusions:

- MS TweakXP from MS powertools D/L sucks worse than liza
minelli's choice in husbands.

- XPOffice upgrade, from Office 2000 needs work in the
install department as it leaves both versions in the prog
file, but only one used.

- the DL patch screws the sys restore.

- something screwed the user accounts and access

- cant find if MS provide a utility tp clean dead/unused
files out.

- XP bundled with hardware manufacturer restore loses its
most valuable after install function - REPAIR!.

- I hate computers and am part exchanging everything from
a personal trappist monk scribe with a quill.
*******************
any feedback on the issues, what caused the issues would
be helpful, as after my restore from external drive, will
be back at the stage of re-installing XPOffice, and as
such, circumstances dictate a loop back to the beginning
of this post.
********************

thats the meat, now the gravy:

running: XP-SP2/XP Office SP3/Symantec Corp Edition Anti-
Virus/Spybot/Spysweep/AdAware/PC-Cillin.

use hijackthis and spybot regularly, everything up to
date, latest version of .net ASP, BIOS and so on

thank you..
