SP2 update screwed things up

I followed the automatic update prompts that came up after
I booted my comp. The one for Win XP SP2 completed and I
rebooted (my CD is for SP1). Now I cannot connect to the
internet, can't check my email, and get an error when I try
to open windows explorer or control panel. If I open a
program such as notepad, I can browse the directories just
fine through the Open... menu option.

This is the error message:

Add Word: explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x022289e6" referenced memory at
"0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Is there anything I can do? I've tried reinstalling Win XP
from the CD, and aside from boot up being substantially
slower (minutes vs. seconds as it was before) things were
working ok until I tried upgrading to SP2 again. Same thing
happened both times, only the instruction in the error
message was at a different location the first time
(0x01c489e6).
