DVD no loger playing

Since I've installed XP Pro I am no longer able to view DVDs on my system.
Do I need to purchase new software to play DVDs or is there somthing I can
d-load from Microsoft? I currently have Windows Media player v.9
The DVD player is working as it will play CDs just fine.
