    First thing to check are the applications you have installed that run on
    bootup. Many applications were not created for a multi-user environment and
    some of them may cause an issue with fast user switching. My own experience
    was that I was able to switch but I'd receive an alert the application would
    be disabled in the account to which I had switched. However, that doesn't
    preclude the possibility that an application might prevent you from
    switching altogether.

    I'd look at what's loading on startup, especially those applications that
    place icons in the notification area (the area to the left of the clock) as
    one of them is the likely culprit. You may have to remove that application
    in order to test and find the source of the problem.
