start and task bar-- please help me?

everytime i click on the start button there is at least a
30 second delay. I've tried everything to fix this
problem. When i click start my task manager is telling me
my computer is idle. Whenever it does bring up the start
menu, it freezes and takes forever to open anything. my
last resort is to delete windows, but i'm trying to work
around this. Can anyone help me please??
