I'm just throwing out possibilities, and incorrect duplex settings on any machine will make things sssslllllloooooowwwww. SP4 caused problems with Citrix MetaFrame, but a hotfix was released shortly afterwards, and there's also a hotfix for the spooler service & winlogon pegging the CPU.

Always good to have a tested backup available so you can roll back after a failed install, virus outbreak...
