I'm configuring a Win2K Pro system in which I have a
.bat file in a user's startup. It runs an old DOS .exe
and I want it to run full screen.

I have it configured to automatically log on to this
particular user. So when the system boots up, it runs
the .bat file and the .exe in full screen.

But after a few seconds the screen shows the
Windows desktop and on the taskbar, the 'cmd.exe' is
"sunken" as if it's the current window open. If
I click on that taskbar item, it brings up the full
screen cmd.exe.

Is there something I can do to fix it so that
it doesn't show the Windows desktop?

I thought it maybe a startup issue, so I took
a unix sleep.exe program and delayed a long time
before actually running the executable, but no luck.

The default shell is Explorer.exe; you could try and
specify a different shell, e.g. cmd.exe. See "Different
Shells for Different Users"

Does it apply to W2K Pro?
