Dear All,
I'm not an expert, but I've set up a windows 2000 server and two windows xp
pro workstations all part of a workgroup. The server only facilitates storage
of each workstations' documents and various other files which are accessed
using software residing on the workstations. No fancy stuff involved.
I apologise in advance for my long post but I have a few questions and I
decided to put them all in this thread rather than restate my setup.
1. The server has one folder at the root level, i.e. C:/(folder name) and
inside this folder are child folders (A, B, C) which are shared and
accessible by each workstation. Some of the folders being shared are only
accessible by a specific workstation user. Let me explain,
Windows 2000 server: Only one user account "Admin". Sharing folders "A", "B"
and "C".
Workstation 1: Only one user account called "USER 1". Can access "A" and "C".
Workstation 2: Only one user account called "USER 2". Can access "B" and "C".
Now what I have done is create the two accounts "USER 1" and "USER 2" on the
server so that they can access the shared folders. I have changed the
permissions of folders "A" and "B" to allow "USER 1" and "USER 2" access,
respectively.
Everything works, but I am not entirely sure that I have "secured access"
well enough. I logged onto say "workstation 1" as "user 1" and I obviously
get a message that I don't have permission to see folder "B" but when I
opened the properties dialogue I was able to change permission settings!!!
Can someone please advise me if I have setup the permissions and accounts
correctly on the server?
2. I have read a lot about synchronising the time on servers and
workstations but it's all confusing to me! I need some clarification. I
currently have the two workstations setup to synchronise the time with
time.windows.com. The 2000 server seems to lack this option so I set the time
manually in the control panel.
Should I change the way I handle time and if so can someone explain
step-by-step?
3. Both workstations and the server are directly connected to a D-link
router which in turn is connected to an ADSL modem and then the internet.
I've setup static IPs. I don't have unnecessary ports open and all are
protected by Panda BusinesSecure 2006 administered via AdminSecure on the
server. This includes anti-virus, firewall, malware, spyware etc protection.
The windows xp firewall is disabled on both workstations. I have enabled
remote desktop connection on both xp pro workstations and terminal services
on the server to allow remote access to all three computers. I have changed
the ports on the two workstations and also opened the necessary port
forwarding in the d-link router. I have also using gpedit.msc changed so that
the connection is encrypted at the highest level and that the password is
always required. This has been done on all three. This is the setup,
Server: port 3389
Workstation 1: port 3390
Workstation 2: port 3391
Should I be doing more to secure the remote desktop connection to the three
computers and if so what?
4. I'm seeing weird performance issues with all three computers. They are
very slow to login and now and then slow when you click on the start menu and
say try to open the control panel or do something else. After the computers
have been on for a while they seem to get noticeably faster. No unnecessary
software is installed and they are kept up to date with regards to windows
updates as well as software updates.
I regularly defrag, scandisk, disc cleanup, empty prefetch (win xp).
I've enabled the following on the two workstations only using the group
policy editor, Computer Config > Admin > System > Login (always wait for
network when computer starts and when logging in).
I don't know if this is part of the problem but it doesn't explain why the
server is slow logging in when the workstations are turned off. The server
only shares four folders and all the computers are fairly new (about 2
years). The connections between all the computers are 100Mbit/s according to
network status on each computer.
I have read that the problem might have to do with the static IPs and that I
have entered the two DNS servers provided by my ISP.
What should I do?
5. I'm seeing some odd problem when shutting down the two workstations. A
message appears when they shut down about some file called dwwin.exe. I have
searched in the win xp expert zone on microsoft.com and it appears that it
has to do with Dr Watson.
What can I do to solve this problem?
Again I apologise for the length of my post and I have spent a considerable
amount of time searching for answers, but it would be helpful to get help
with my particular setup.
Many thanks for any replies!
