I recently had to replace my hard drive.

As the old drive was sort of functional I copied the contents to a backup disk on the network, and then created a backup of the C: and D: drives using ntbackup.

the C: drive is the Boot and the D: actually contains the win2k
installation.

I partitioned the new drive with the same number of partitions as the
old drive and copied the files into place.

I then installed win2k on the C: drive (undated it to SP4 to match the
install I was trying to activate),modified the boot.ini file to point to
the installation on the D: drive and all should have been good. Not so.
The second (original install) on the D: drive does not show the desktop.
It flicks into existence on startup and disappears.

Simple I thought, restore from the backup I had made. So I restored
the C: and D: drives from backup. No joy. Problem remained.

I reinstalled the old drive and made a 'system state' backup and applied
that. Again the problem persists.

I have checked the files listed on the Microsoft site as causing this
type of problem and the versions are the same as in the original disk.

What has me stopped is that the original disk still starts up and works
fine, but the new disk exhibits this weird problem

What are you actually trying to achieve? You write that you
re-installed Win2000 on drive C:. This means that you have
a working copy of Win2000, which should enable you to
copy the old installation to drive D: while Windows is up and
running. No need to use ntbackup.exe or any other backup/
imaging tools!

I would have thought so, but it simply does not produce a working copy!

What I am trying to achieve is a working copy of my old installation
files! Should not be hard but it has defied me for 2 months now.

What I really do not understand is that I boot the old disk all is good.
Copy the files to the new disk and when I boot that copy the
desktop does not load.

ntbackup is not the easiest or most flexible tool when it comes to
restoring a system, especially not when you wish to clone a working
system. If this was my system then I would get a copy of Acronis
TrueImage and use it to make a clone of the old disk. The whole
process would take around one hour, depending on the size of the
disk. Alternatively, if money is an issue then you could achieve
the same with a Bart PE boot CD (www.bootdisk.com). It's
free but it requires a lot more knowledge.

I note that you have been at this for two months and that it is almost
two weeks since your previous post. It took me quite some time to
re-familiarise myself with your problem. I'm happy to step you
through the cloning process if you need further assistance, but only
if you pull this through quickly. If you don't then this thread will
disappear from my newsreader's horizon and you will have to ask
someone else to assist you.

Thanks for the offer Pegasus, but the copy of ghost I have 'should' have done the job and didn't.

Ok this post is just for closure.....
Just in case someone pulls up the thread with a similar problem.

Had the .net framework 2.0 beta installed. Felt that it might be implicated and tried uninstalling it without success. Ran chkdsk/f on the system volume and installed the latest Google desktop (could not find the download for the original) in the same session. Not sure if it was the .net log files that chkdsk fixed or the install of Google desktop, but all is cured.
