Windowsxp Home

I'm trying to over write or delete the following key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\htmlfile

If I try to delete it it says I don't have proper permission.
If I try to over write it, same thing. It won't let me change
the permissions.

Any suggestions?

Deleting that key would not be appropriate. Neither probably
would be modifying it. What are you to trying to do? Have you
made a Full Registry Backup (not "export") before editing the
registry? Under XPH you may need to log in Safe Mode with the
built-in Administrator account. IIRC (I don't use that OS
here)

The PC in question has two users, both with admin privileges.
One can open hyperlinks in Outlook email and one cannot.

I have searched the web and MSKB and tried everything I could
find.

I reset the "Reset Web Settings" in IE 6.

I tried to fix a possible corrupted reg key ~
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command
~ by importing a new reg key as found in the various web sites.
When I click the new .reg file I get the message "cannot
import".

If I go into the registry and click on the htmlfile folder, I
get "cannot open - error while opening key".

If it says "error" rather than "access denied" you may have a
corrupt key or possibly a process may have locked that key.

That's what I'm trying to fix. Yes before doing any registry
mods I always do a "backup".

The reason for deleting the key, I thought then I would be able
to import a copy of a working key from another PC as suggested
in MSKB.

I cannot help with IE.

Once logged in with correct security context it should work. If
not you may have more issues and should start by examining the
current Registy permissions on that keys/subkeys.
