"My Computer" problems

When I try and list files using "My Computer" I get a
list of folders, but the searching torch only appears on
the right window and the system seems to hang. The
programme is "not responding" and I then have to end task.
Can anyone tell me how to repair the programme that
runs "My computer"
I cannot reinstall from the CD as I get the error that
you cannot upgrade from Service Pack 4 to Service Pack
2!! I don't want to have to lose all my settings and
reinstall service pack 2 then pack 4.

Can anyone help me and tell me how to repair this? Many
