USB printer disconnects

My Lexmark X125 disconnects randomly. There is no power timeout set in
device manager for any of the USB host controllers or hubs.
It seemes to take longer for disconnect (several days now from within a
day) since I replaced the Lexmark driver with a Microsoft driver. I did
the same on the USB host controller (from SiS to Microsoft).
Lexmark support tells me repeatedly to un- and re-install the software.
The are clueless.
My system is WIN2K/SP4, MoBo is ASUS P4S800D-X)
