Printer Sharing Problems

I have a workgroup with printer and file sharing enabled. The HP printer is attached to a W2K (SP4) machine.
On a W2K (SP4) client, clicking print in Word and choosing the network printer locks up the machine or at best it takes many many minutes to return. (This is after already having logged on and accessed a shared folder).
On an XP (SP2) machine printing is sub-second.
On the W2K client getting the printer properties dialog to open takes many minutes. On the XP client it takes 1-2 seconds.
I have already updated the drivers.
Any suggestions?
