You don't have to publish a printer in Active Directory to use it over the
network. You can use the Add Printer Wizard on the client, select Network
Printer, then "Connect to this printer..." and key the UNC name of the
    printer (\\computername\printersharename) or see
    http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterAllUsers.htm for an alternative
    technique.

Are the Windows XP computers that have the printers attached actually
members of the Windows 2000 Domain? The reason I ask this is because on the
XP SP1 computers in the office (which are Domain Members) the "List in the
directory" check box appears on the printer sharing tab, but it does not
appear on my Windows XP computer at home which is NOT a domain member.

There may also be some Group Policy Objects on the Domain that affect this -
    see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;234270.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
