I have a friend whos friend installed some 3rd party fax
software on a Win2K SP4 machine (Celeron 450/128MB/8 GB
HDD). Now the printer refuses to work. What happens is
this:

When you open the printer window (in control panel) after
a few seconds I get the error Spoolsv.exe generated an
error and will be shut down. It then gives the memory
locations 0x78010497 and 0x000c98000. Memory could not be
written.

If we shut off the fax service, it still happens, even
after restarting the spooler service. We have uninstalled
as much of this software as we can find.

You uninstalled the fax service, but did you uninstall it's drivers?
Go to File > Server Properties > Drivers to manage these.

It is also possible that this fax software installed a port monitor that is
still resident Check the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
If you have a key relating to a fax monitor (other than the one below)
delete it and see if that fixes your problem.

The default port monitors are:
- AppleTalk Printing Devices (When Services for Macintosh is installed)
- BJ Language Monitor
- Local Port
- PJL Language Monitor
- Standard TCP/IP Port
- USB Monitor
- Windows NT Fax Monitor (when applicable)
